Solful Doulas

Preparing your mind, body, and SOl for Parenthood

Our story

Solful Doulas was born with the birth of my daughter Solana. I did not have a doula present at my birth, after my experience I realized the importance and significance of having a doula present at your birth. It was a powerful and eye opening experience for me as a first time mom.

As a black mom, I understand firsthand the importance of advocating for yourself and the power of knowledge in a hospital setting. Through my doula training as well as the continuing education that I often seek out, I am committed to maintaining up to date knowledge and training to best support my clients. I want to provide emotional and physcial support to the birthing parent as well as their family. I understand every pregnancy and every parenthood journey is different, every person desires a different level of support during their journey. No matter the color, age, sexuality, or religion I support and educate families for their journey to parenthood. I want to be the sounding board, emotional and comfort support, and an educational resource while developing last connections with the families I serve.

About Me

My name is Rachel Gilliam. I am based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I got interested in prenatal development and infant care starting in high school. I have over 10 years in the childcare field as a babysitter, nanny, childcare center teacher. I briefly went into nonprofits and sales, but I knew my calling was birth work. My inrterest in birth work was amplified after the birth of my daughter 2022. During my pregnancy with my daughter, I had complications that could have very well made me a statistic. I know firsthand how powerful being informed, prepared and confident in your birth setting can be. From a young age, my family instilled in me that knowledge is power and how important education is. With this in mind, I am always striving to stay up to date with new methods and techniques, as well as seeking out additional training. I am trained through ProDoula and I utilize other birth work learning resources. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my daughter, cooking, baking, gardening, and crafting.

I strive to create a positive, empowering, calming, and informative experience with all of my clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How early in my pregnancy can I book my consultation for services?

A: You can book your consultation as soon as early as you feel comfortable!

Q: Do you accept insurance or medicare?

A: We currently do not accept insurance, but we are in the process of getting certified to do so. We also have the option of payment plans if needed.

Q: What is the difference between a doula and a provider?

A: A doula does not provide or perform anything medical. A doula is there for support, guidance, and education. A doula provides the one on one support that you may need to prepare for parenthood.

Q: I don’t think I want a doula at my birth but I still want a doula’s guidance during my pregnancy, can I do that?

A: You absolutely do not need to have a doula present at your birth. Birth is a vulnerable and intimiate space that should be comfortable for you. If you still would like doula services such as our birth preferences workshop or our comfort measure class, you can absolutely do that. We can also provide virtual support during your labor experience if you don’t want that extra person in your birth space.

Q: Do I need to live in Pittsburgh to get services?

A: No you do not! We can provide virtual support as well as zoom class.
